Hi Guys
anybody purchased a bike from Italy and rode it back.
Can you use the Italian number plate?
or is it best to get a bike courier company to collect it for me.
Cheers |

Hi CT..........Would take some faith in the bike that it was roadworthy enough for the journey.......
Evidently anyone from Europe can ride a bike/vehicle across borders...so thats not such an issue....but for registering a bike imported from Italy in the UK you'd need the Italian transfer documents...this can only be done by the owner taking their version of the V5 to their DVLA and making the export notice from their country.....this takes a couple of days...and this document you need to register the vehicle in the UK...as it gives official notice of its date of registration...and its identity......
Aside from that is the cost of riding...albeit possibly fun.......a Courier charges some 350-450GBP to collect a bike and deliver to UK address.......such cost just cant be beaten when you consider cost of flying over there, petrol, tolls and ferries.......I've had several bikes collected from Italy and brough over ...using Chaz Mortimers courier service (Ex TT race winner...and all round nice guy) |

I rode my SB6 back from Ireland but it was road worthy. If your bike has stood a length of time there could be some issues which might leave you sitting in a recovery truck for a thousand miles or so _________________ Don't read everything you believe |

The Big leap of Faith is if you decide to buy from a distance and send money direct to their bank account and hope the bike is there when the courier calls to collect..........
Italy has fairly recent new laws stopping people from Banking more than 2500 euros in cash.....so all sellers I've dealt with have insisted on Bank transfers to their accounts..then they make the export documents......then the courier can collect.......The reg plate is retained by their authorities.....more as a check that all fines, liens etc are cleared before vehicle is exported....Document not 100% required...but it makes registering in the UK a WHOLE lot easier...as engine, frame numbers are on it...previous reg NUmber, buyers name, address and date of birth...and more importantly...date of first registration for proof to DVLA if you are after an age related number plate.......After that its just an MOT and send forms to DVLA if vehicle is over ten years old....... |

Depending on the bikes age depends on the paperwork, also depending on what paperwork you have depends on what hoops the DVLA/HMRC want you to jump through, and believe me in the case of Bimota, if you don't have the correct paperwork, you will never get a copy from the Factory ( I have tried) so you will never register it !!!!!
Do your homework.
What you looking at ?? |

hi guys
Thanks for the info
I am looking at a DB5r
two different bikes I have seen
they are more available there.
Unless I buy from a dealer it seems there is going to be certain risks
could, I guess go out and have a look, then get a courier. I will see how it pans out.
Cheers

2Bims is not going to be happy !!! although at least you at the other end of the country so never going to bump into the only other road going one in the UK.
Still you not started off easy !! Under 10 yrs is defineately more difficult !!! MSVA involed for type approval as you never going to get a Ceertificate of Comformity for that puppy !!
Is this a look or a serious LOOK ?? |

So does that mean it will have to be dead stock ie exhausts and all that
Why is it more difficult, is it not the case
MOT and send some paperwork off? and wait

No sorry.
Bikes of 10yrs and younger have to conform to latest Euro 4 ( is it) standard, so same standards as a brand new bike. So have to comply on all noise/ emmissions/ pedestrian impact etc , as if they were going through a full type approval, well you will as it will need an MSVA( motorcycle single vehicle approval). So YES need to be as bog standard as you can get , and will need cats etc in there also.
10yrs and older fall into the CLASSIC type of era , so basically MOT , correct paperwork and alot easier. |
