OK, the SB6 has been layed up a couple of months and is refusing to fire up.
New plugs, no joy.
Carbs parcially stripped, jets and passe ways cleaned etc still no joy.
It appears to be getting fule.
Not that knowlageable about CV carbs, use to slide carbs.
The batterys are tired, so it will only spin for 20 secons or so and then they need a recharge.
Any suggestions would be good.
Thanks.
PS.
Think once I get it fired up I should take it to a dyno, any sugestions in the Cheshire area would be cool. _________________ Si...

...Hate to say this but put the old plugs in and give it a try
These engines, for some reason are very temperamental when it comes to plugs... _________________ SB6 mk1 (project mega light, big bore)

Put a pair of jump leads on it, the small croc clips are easier to use.
If you use a car don't run the engine but if you use another bike run the engine. _________________ Don't read everything you believe |

...I ask because I have used a running car to jump a bike on several occasions
Would the same rule follow for say....starting a small 100cc by jumping it from a Gold wing?
I'm assuming this may be because of the reg/rec's but with modern bikes with decent electrics........
I've googled this and found the same statement but many more comments stating that it's rubbish...
Electronics experts, please feel free to help me out here as I now need to know why????? _________________ SB6 mk1 (project mega light, big bore)

...I do
..BUT, I would also like to know why the so called experts teach these things. Unfortunately, I'm not one to follow blindly, I need to know the reason
Is it because it WILL cause serious damage or is it the same as "you must use a torque wrench"?

A good question, why it is not recommended.
I do know.... do not use a truck / lorry..... its 24 Volt… _________________ vince

Maybe it's like using a trickle charger instead of just connecting an ordinary charger to a battery 24/7. Maybe it's because you don't need to run the car engine the battery on it's own is enough.
Also you should use a car battery to jump a bike with injection - you can fry the ECU, which is expensive. _________________ Don't read everything you believe |

My YB8 had a low battery and had trouble starting. I put a new battery on it and it's fine now. So maybe the battery is a similar problem with your bike.
I'm not sure but when a car is running the alternator puts out 14.8v to the battery. Maybe this is too much for a bike? _________________ Bimotas, Yamaha FZR 2TK, Honda NC30, MV Agusta F3 800, Aprilia RS250 |

Finally got chance to try jump starting it today.
Yep it fired up fine.
Looks like the battery is fooked. As it wont start without a jump even when warm.
Think I'll try a MotoBatt, standard GSXR 1100 WR fitment possibly. Try one rather than the usual 2 x 6amp jobbies.
I'll keep you posted on the battery front.
On another front I have noticed my Bim appears to be a little different from standard. Airbox has had the mod with both sides cut out. But it is fitted with a cotton / gauze pleated air filter. Looks like a K and N ?
Fuel tap is a 2 outlet jobby, is this standard?
Cheers for the help. _________________ Si...

Can you make a picture of the K&N airfilter please
I'm curious about that filter..
And yes, as far as I now it’s a 2 way outlet. _________________ vince

Mine has a K+N, it's cut down from a flat panel and mounted in the hole.
The batteries are 12 volt and a healthy alternator will put out a lot more than 14.8 volts but the Reg Rec keeps it down to about 14.5 volts. It's not the volts it's amps that fry things.
A Gix 1100 battery won't fit under the clocks and there's a divider in the middle of the batteries' box so it's easier to just replace the standard ones - they last a couple of years _________________ Don't read everything you believe |
