...despite the million other projects I'm working on and because of the amount of work involved in making the duel pods fit, I've had a word with Daz and we think that a larger air box is the way to go.

The standard, quite small and oddly shaped air box...

...tha base/support for the air-box...

...Now the two together...What if all of this was the air box and stretched out as much as possible in all directions?...

...and then the whole back cut out and a filter fitted?...

...Tested on the dyno, back to back with a standard one and if all that works, made in carbon?

Ok...your thoughts and suggestions guys...over to you

If I understand it right, all the air will suck in at the back of the air box.
But there is one big exhaust pipe what will warm the air that’s going in to the air box.
I don’t know if that is an improvement.

..Maybe right, The air filter could be the entire left hand side or right side or both. Maybe even ducted from the front Wink

It cant be on the bottom or top or front Wink

Yes, well I'm planning this for going forward, If you want it for going backwards, count me out Wink

Bimota tried ducting fresh air from the front of the fairing to the air box, It was with a quite feeble 30mm convoluted hose that didn't even run in a straight line. Perhaps Bimota's admission that the air box was woefully too small and they hadn't got the design skills to sort the issue Rolling Eyes

Maybe the time has come to finally get the SB6 to realise it's (almost) full potential Wink

...without a complete tank/fairing redesign, we are going to have to be a bit more creative on the SB6.....

So I take it a 4 litre fuel tank is 'insufficient' then??????????

So is a 40-50% increase in volume not going to be worth while ?

I'd say any increase in airbox volume is worth persuing, as the stock SB6 airbox is woefully small, far smaller than that of the GSXR1100 that the engine is taken from.

I'd also not get too focused on numbers, as in the Dyno measured output of the engine. What is also very relevant is the response of the engine and the roll on and snap throttle power gains, not just wide open throttle output. Often jet kits don't result in massive power gains, but the response and how the engine reacts to any change in throttle position are not measurable but so very worth while.

Personally, I'd expect the bike to absolutely relish any extra air it can draw, as the stock SB6 airbox is so evidently far too small for the needs of the motor it is fitted to.

OK....putting all the complicated stuff aside, back to basics......
step one in the design process, keeping it simple......
Remove the filter, fabricate the same type of (crap) filters in both sides of the base.....instant 40-50% increase in air box volume without expensive moulds, carbon etc.
How does step one sound?

...So, initially, if I knock up something like that and have a standard air box to hand too, they can be tested back to back and depending on the success (or not) depends if it's worth step two.....or not?

...Thoughts?......

I think there are two reasons why the air box is inefficient.
One it’s to small, second the air what is suck in is to warm.
The air box opening is low on the engine, it is partially locked by the frame and tank sit cover and at the back an exhaust pipe what gives radiant heat.

My guess is that if I can lower the temperature it will be an improvement for engine performance. Idea

I'm doing some research on a Peltier, maybe I can do something with it. I don’t know. Confused
