I remember seeing this pic a while ago but just rediscovered it and got me thinking (dangerous)
On the Vee Two site the racer(s) is mentioned in passing.. " A 900 DB2 Bimota in Vee Two colours. This was a Vee Two / Bimota Joint Venture and we won the 1996 world 'BEARS' Series with this bike. Bimotas only world championship series win to date." [obviously the last bit is not correct!]
Possibly this bike which has Alan Cathcart's name on the screen (Image courtesy J. Wood & Company Auctioneers and Liquidators, from their Daytona 2002 Antique & Classic Motorcycle Auction)
The bike cropped up again in an auction in October 2007 as Lot 254: in Oct auction operated by: World of Decor Auctions , Orlando, FL selling on behalf od of MotorSports Museum of Orlando (owned by Mr. Boyd K Uzzel)
SaleEstimate was $10,000 - $12,000 (with buyers premium of 20%)
Lot description: 1996 Bimota DB2R Factory Racer Motorcycle. 985cc. Paint Color: Blue. #99. Actual Bike "Sir" Alan Cathcart won 1996 Bears World Championship on. Chassis direct from Bimota. Engine by Ducati specialist Vee Two Australia. This motorcycle was built 4 days prior to the World Championship Race it won. 105HP @ 9700 RPM.
....and this picture from a Portuguese website of the same bike.
In 2012 there was a very short thread on this forum (no link given) which implies it was up for sale again ..."Bike is Vee Two s/n#1 Bimota Db2,lots of spares. Bike located in Michigan USA. Best offer takes everything. Possible trades, looking for a Paul Smart Replica"
I wonder where the bike went (and it looks like there was another) and can anybody add to this intriguing bike's history? _________________ Not as many bikes as I would like and already too many to keep up with!

Thats kind of weird after i had just posted about the Wilzig racetrack etc.!
just seen the 99 bike in his Flickr photo stream (in background) with the photo dated stamped Sept 2011. Its also and also in a YouTube vid. (2015) so probably still in the Wilzig racing garage. _________________ Not as many bikes as I would like and already too many to keep up with!

I've dropped a line to Vee Two to see if Brook Henry can add anything about this significant bike. Also tried to contact Alan Wilzig and Alan Cathcart. Will wait and see!
Interestingly (at least to me) i can see that there have been two magazine articles (both I think in 1997) about the racer. One Ditch the other German..wouldnt be surprised if both based on test/article by Catcart.. we'll see.....
In Dutch and ....

and a couple of more pics found via FB Search.
OVER (Japan) exhaust and DB4 swinging arm, single FCRs on short intakes. Marvic streamline mag wheels , 43 mm Paiolis and Brembo GP2 billet calipers up front. Very tasty!
Note that in the assumed later shots there seems to be some alloy shielding around the carb area..trying to creat a pseudo 'air box'? _________________ Not as many bikes as I would like and already too many to keep up with!

I remember reading that Alan had a db4 swing arm fitted to give a 1 inch longer wheelbase and presumably more stable high speed handling (and to keep the front wheel down!). Why not contact Mr Cathcart: I've found him very amenable and I'm sure he'd be happy to reminisce about this bike, on which he won a major championship. I don't know his current address though... _________________ 1998 Bimota DB2 edizione finale naked

Yup....thats a DB4 swingarm on the back....which with its normal chain adjusters and not eccentrics...means you could extend out an inch or 2 further back....look how long the rod arm on the base of the rear ohlins is though...that looks like its had a foot added to tip the front end in and back end up |

My mistake, the Over frame kit swinging arm is very similar but I agree this is DB4. Have also added some more info into previous posts. It looks like there have been a few 'keepers' of the bike before its current owner. I hope he gets it out on track. Definitely a bike to add to the ranks of DB1, YB4, YB9 as a top level race bike alongisde the earlier GP racers.
I havent read the 'Bible' but does it document the race expoits of the various Bimota models? _________________ Not as many bikes as I would like and already too many to keep up with! |

Have you got a copy of the bible?....I do but havent read it....generally though....for the race era....it pretty much covers all of the Bimota factory led stuff rather than any other teams or privateers running Bimotas....it also sort of "tails off" around 1997/98......only a couple of images of DB4 as it was not finalised in design at the time....it had twin underseat exhausts like DB2 |
