I found a KB3 since 1983 here in Sweden for a few months ago. It was in a bad condition and haven´t been on the roads since 1991. So, my mission is to bring the bike back on the roads this spring in a good condtion. I´m trying to hold it closed to the original since 1983. Actually I found most of the Bimota parts needed. I found a rear sprocket in aluminium, the bent aluminium pipe that spread the upper fairing, new turning light holders, new turning lights (from Kawasaki Z1000ST), new fairing glass, new decals, new tyres (16" is hard to find), new headlight (from Fiat 127) and rear light lens (from Suzuki GSX1100E). What I haven´t found yet is the mufflers. Bimota classic parts said that they perhaps later can found them. It´s perhaps possible to renovate them.

The engine is now upper end renovated, bored to 1160 cc in a GPZ1100 cylinder with new Wiseco pistons. Higher cams in good condition from a GPZ1100 1983. New clutch. Repainted engine and some new engine covers in glossy black in Z1000R ELR look. New oil cooler. It´s a set of Mikuni VM33 on it but there I still miss some small parts.

The fairing and the frame is painted pink with lila stripes. Probably very nice during the eighties. I will repaint the fairing and the frame in the original white red design after test drive.

So if you guys are nice, you perhaps can help me with following questions:

Paint code for the red an white color scheme?
Where can I buy parts for the old Mikuni VM33´s from the eighties?
Where can I found new or used mufflers?
Very nice if I could find a new or in good condition wiring loom to a Kawasaki Z1000J that they used for the KB3.
New clocks or in good condition from Z1000J. The existing is quite tatty.

It´s a nice project but of course much more costly than calculated. But who said it should be without costs to have fun?

But more fun it will be this summer when I´m back on the road with this extraordinary bike.

Welcome to the world of Bimota Ownership.....colour scheme you mention is "screaming" for you to post a picture up...which is quite tricky but please feel free to email one to 88888888888888888 and I would be happy to post a picture or 2

I'll have a look around various people I know for pipes/end cans...notororiously difficult for early bimotas though as they made them themselves for the early bikes.....is it a 4:1 or 4:2 system?

Clocks.....Zpower in the UK may sell new clocks.....they sell everything for Z engined kawasakis and actually set up links with kawasaki in Japan to remanufacture pretty much everything using the previous makers in Japan....Just google them

You mentioned colour codes......No one has ever really got to the bottom of this....

You are in Sweden....Me in UK...bikes made in Italy....RAL numbers is quite a common way of internationally coding paints.....but its a modern thing....back in the day...each country called paints by different numbers for paints made in their own country

I have a schedule somewhere of paint codes I'll try and dig out

Nice bike and it sounds like you have the project sorted. And yes they always end up costing more than than you think, or want, but there is great satisfaction in the end.

The best source for Mikuni carb parts is Allen Performance. They seem to have everything, including the elusive power jet solenoids I needed for my TZ.

I "second" Allens Performance......Mikuni specialists.......

You talk about needing end cans.....which are rarer than hens teeth made from Dodo droppings......with all the engine upgrade work and carbs etc....it would be sensible and more appropriate to have some "open" end cans fabricated to suit......its great to have engine upgrades and big bore kits and bigger carbs....but kind of pointless of the exhausts then strangle the output....

They don’t have any spares for the old Mikuni VM33

I try to find some picures tomorrow.

It’s a 4-1-2 system. It makes sense what you say. The engine will be strangled with the original cans. Back in the days someone cut off most of the baffles inside and the end piece. If I use the existing cans I have to hope that my neighbours and the MOT like a roaring bigbore Z as much as I do.

Z-power don’t have clocks for the J model.

It would be very nice if you find something.

What parts do you need? The VM33 smoothbores look like they've got standard Mikuni internals which are readily available.
