Mine has always been a bit of a nightmare and is pretty useless when riding hard when you need it most with wild fluctuations... is this a common problem on other bikes or just mine?

Any alternative available or anybody have a good one if that exists?

Maybe you have a dodgy thremostat/thermister housing sending the wrong signal.....this is for sale by "SB8R" member on ebay

Thanks 2bims. I have replaced thermostat and sensors already so I think it is an issue with this particular gauge and a loose needle.. loathe to take it apart without a replacement available... I know my limitations with a csrewdriver and hammer.
