Those of you that are on FB have already seen these photo's, but I thought i'd post up here as well for those who may not do the dreaded facebook. I think the forum a better platform for this kind of thing than FB.
I purchased this DB2J over a year ago and it's been sitting in the back of my shed ever since. I've recently dragged it out of its corner to give it a clean up, check over and get it going. It was too good of a deal not to jump on, but at the time I wasn't really sure if it was a basket case or not....
[/img]
On first inspection it looks to be in reasonable condition and all there.

Time to see what's under the bodywork for the first time …..
There were quite a few comments on my FB post (mainly from 2bims), which were very helpful and much appreciated. Many of you on here have a lot more knowledge than me when it comes to DB2's and in particular the DB2J, so feel free to post up and comments that you might have if you see something that doesn't quite look right. From the comments that I got on FB it appears that this bike has most of it's original and correct parts _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Looks like it wont take much sprucing up. What does the 400 engine kick out horse power wise ? |

Not many
49hp according to a magazine review that I read about it. It should still go not too bad with the low gearing due to the oversized rear sprocket _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Has anybody seen this before? It looks to have earth straps that come out of the sheath on both spark plug wires, neither of them are connected to anything. I’m assuming the they should be bolted the engine or frame, but I’m not sure what their purpose is. When I get home I’ll have a look to see where the other end goes to

The earth strap wires are fitted to Magnacor (I think ) HT leads. I tried a set on my VDue in the early days. Maybe required for Top end drag bikes but not required for road bikes. I took mine off & went back to standard as there was no difference |

Brian ......from DownUnder.
This is great....I love these strip and builds.
You forget the simplicity and detail until some of the earlier Bimotas are opened up.
If did that to the DB9.......the wiring loom would give you a fever...tidy it is not.
Please keep posting

Thanks Weed. I've never heard of magnacor coils. To be honest i'm not sure what the original DB2 coils look like so am not even sure what the coils on this bike are. _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Hi Gav,
Thanks for the words of encouragement. I like simple stuff, stuff that I can see how it works and pull it apart if it doesn't work and figure out why. I'm a fitter and turner by trade but never really worked in the machining part of my trade unfortunately. Mostly worked as a mechanical fitter or diesel fitter. I can build stuff if I have a plan and the right materials and tools to do it but I have zero imagination or design skills. That's why I truly appreciate the kind of work that you are doing in the projects that you have underway.
Cheers,

Thats a "mis-read" on your part there Bri......Weed referenced "Magnacor HT LEads…..meaning you plug caps and leads.....You may find that they are permanently bonded into the Coils though.....DB1 Coils are like that...you may want to change the Plug leads due to age on a Db1...but it means changing the coils also....I'd "defo" unscrew the plug caps from the leads and trim the ends to cut into some fresh copper core and rescrew the caps in..and see if you can do the same on the coil ends.....I came across a mis-firing 900ss once...only ran on one cylinder....undid both ends of the Plug lead on that cylinder...copper core was bright green and corroded....snipped back to clean copper....rescrewed in both ends...eh voila...ran on both cylinders... |

Yep my bad, leads not coils, gotcha.
So i'm guessing that these are not the original HT leads then. I'll check it out and trim the ends of the leads as suggested. first photo on 4:45 posting
The left leg of the forks has the rubber bumper (rubber donut) that is half of the steering stop below the lower triple-clamp (immediately below - as in toughing the bottom of the lower triple-clamp) when it should be between the triple-clamps and oriented such that it bumps into that nub sticking out of the frame.
I didn't see the rubber bumper in the photo of the right fork tube.
The rubber bumpers are the sort of thing that rots and falls off but they're quite important to keep the clip-ons and such from slamming into the fairing and cracking it.
Super nice bike, by the way. _________________ 2013 retro Italian agricultural device

3rd photo from 4:45 post
My bad ... the right fork steering stop is there, it's just hiding behind some cable / wire.
The right hand steering stop rubber donut is also in the wrong place on the fork tube and should be between the triple-clamps, not beneath the lower triple-clamp. These steering stops are of the "interference" variety and are emblematic of the simplicity that made me fall in love with my Bimota.
NB - My comments are based on the location of the steering stop bumpers on my 1994 DB2 with the standard 904 motor. Possibly different on the J-type but I'd be surprised. _________________ 2013 retro Italian agricultural device

Thanks MRLost. Another member also pointed out to me that the rubber donuts should be above the lower yoke. It's possible that these forks have been out at some time I guess and they were put back together incorrectly. It's also possible that they were assembled in the wrong position at the factory.... the rest of the bike looks original and unmolested. _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |
