My new Naked has about 6 - 8 mm of play as measured at the bar ends.
Is this within limits? |

Hi Niels
Checked mine and I would say its a millimetre at the bar end max before the wheels starts to move.
Literally just the play in the 5 rose joints, hardly anything to measure.
I would say that needs looking at otherwise it will feel like one on those clown bikes were you turn the bars and nothing happens. |

Vort28, Thanks for the info. I suspected as much. I know with aircraft which have rod controls that there is no discernible play.
Surprisingly, despite the excessive play there are no noticeable adverse effects. Goes to show the design is pretty tolerant.
Any idea how to adjust it? |

I have no practical knowledge ( yet) and only approaching this as an engineer , but guess you need to check the 4 cam arms to see if tight ( headstock lower, frame inner/outer and wheel) then line bars and wheel up and adjust rose joints .
Hang on , thinking about it the rose joints should be play free by their design, so its either a duff rose joint or a loose cam arm to allow play. |

Thanks. I'll leave until the first service and get them to adjust it as part of warranty. Will report back here when the solution becomes evident.
I'm a little wary of tinkering with something I don't know about.
Steve sent me a copy of the workshop manual last night. I've been perusing it. |

I would get it sorted sooner rather than later as clearly something not right and it could lead to a complete steering failure.
Also I would not be to impressed with the PDI of the garage as they clearly did not check this. |

Vort 28, true.
I'm back to China again for another month of toil so will have to leave this until I get back in early September.
Work truly is the curse of the drinking class. Really must retire soon before its all too late.
Barnman, I did that first thing. Everything looks and feels tight.
I notice the manual has a section on adjusting the bearing in the steering head to take out play. I think this may be the clue. Will do more research on the topic while I'm away.
Page 46 Copied and pasted below:
2.8 - ADJUSTING
STEERING
BEARINGS PLAY
Excessive handlebar play indicate
that the steering bearings play
requires adjustment.
Proceed as follow:
Unscrew and remove the steering
head locking screw (1).
Loosen the screws up (2) on the
clamp which holds the steering
head.
Tighten with a dynamometric tool
the ring nut (3) of the steering
column to a 30 Nm torque.
Use the necessarily special
Bimota tool (4) (cod ref.
506297100).
Reassemble the steering head
then tighten the screws (2) to
11 Nm torque and the screw (1)
to 30 Nm applying grease under
the head.
