Hi All
An interesting bit of research required for this quandary = looks like an email to the factory as a last resort. Ive 2 SB3s with not a lot of history. One is "standard" with solid swingarm and parts as per the parts manual, the second is very different and I suspect is a "race special" from the late 70's early eighties. Heres a few pics. The non standard frame is significantly lighter than stock, I think the tubes are thinner walled.
Standard swingarm on the right. The one on the left is drilled and lightened and 20mm narrower at the pivots
Standard frame, note battery mount, long fairing lugs and distance from lower rhs bottom engine mount to frame.
lightened frame, note frame is built different to allow more chain offset for larger width tyre, extra lugs on the top rail, extra lug on the bottom rail, no battery box base. The rear seat support has been added on and the frame originally only had 2 spars that weren't connected at the rear. Spacers with this frame were much smaller reflecting narrower swingarm pivot width
Picci of the swinging arm.
Ive had these parts stripped and all the welding looks original. So far failed to find any pics of this bike. The footpeg mounts are also cast differently to raise the pegs by about 20mm. Currently it has 16 inch, 4.5 inch rear, magnesium Campag wheels with well used slicks on them. The exhaust is also very light, with the collector box being flat instead of the 2x2 square box shape as per the "normal" SB3 and KB1, I suspect to increase ground clearance for the smaller wheels.
Well there you go for a starter gents!! _________________ KB1x2, SB3 SB4 BB1 DB2 Vdue Evo YB11 RB1 Ducati MHR Suzi GS650 |

Hello Nige,
for what it's worth gilera-saturno.de has a piccie of what looks like your frame at an Italian autojumble. I looked up Bimota SB3 drag racer on google and went to images.

Hi Mike
Yep found it, indeed it's probably the one, just a hint of red Marzocchi bottom right!
Still no nearer to what it is??
cheers

Hello Nige,
some of the Bimota race frames for the Harley two stroke works racers in the mid seventies had peforated swinging arms like yours - it certainly doesn't look like something that could have been done after assembly,

It's defo been done b4 assembly as the swingarm is not just perforated box section, there is a stiffener in the middle. I get them back from the coaters tomorrow fully stripped so I can check before they get redone. See if all the welding etc matches up and see if they have had any repairs done _________________ KB1x2, SB3 SB4 BB1 DB2 Vdue Evo YB11 RB1 Ducati MHR Suzi GS650 |

Certainly an interesting find Nige. Did you know that the bikes were different when you acquired them? _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Hi Brian
I didn't know they were fundamentally different sizes and engine offset. the plan was to make one really good one. I've checked the frame parts and it's all matching original welding except a small repair on a coil mount.
Looks like an attempt at talking to Bimota, but really need one of the old school or race development chaps from the 80's. Wonder if Con on here knows the right person?😄 _________________ KB1x2, SB3 SB4 BB1 DB2 Vdue Evo YB11 RB1 Ducati MHR Suzi GS650 |

They sure are different. Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to make a different bike. Did Bimota make SB3 race bikes?
Here is a photo of another stock frame:
No large holes in that one. |

Hi Bud
Thanks for the pic. One of the frames is what I would call "standard", the holy frame certainly isn't.
another difference I've found is that it's wider across the rear axle, despite being narrower across the swingarm pivot bearings. I'll pen an email to The factory and wait!😡 _________________ KB1x2, SB3 SB4 BB1 DB2 Vdue Evo YB11 RB1 Ducati MHR Suzi GS650 |

I wish I could post pics without first having to put them in photobucket,
just sent Nigel an email
found the sister bike in Verona
holes and everything
I'll put it all up on Facebook in the next few days
The highpoint of our week in Italy (for me anyway)
Just can't believe this thing hasn't been found before !
facebook address: https://www.facebook.com/ian.alderton.33
Quite jealous of Nige for having such an historic piece of kit
Only soothed by the thought of the still 'on the way' YB4 in the barn : ) _________________ Bimota DB2 tricolore, Bimota YB4e.i, Ducati 851 tricolore, Ducati Hailwood Replica, 1968 Gitan Grillo sport, Yamaha GTS1000, Honda Deauville, Honda GB500 Clubman

Just sent all my pics to Nige
they are also on Photobucket
http://s1214.photobucket.com/user/thecrankcase_com/library/Bimota/SB3-verona?sort=3&page=1
and a couple here
In the Nicolis museum in Verona with a KB1 for company
swingarm like Niges' extended footrest plates
Forcella forks with calipers that I've never seen before !
shortened footrests, maybe the brackets were left over from the right foot shift days ?
more holes
Looks like a bit of Ferrari connection ! exhaust plate says: DUERRE FIORANO but the first D could be an O or even a Q ?
The info notice with the bike calls it a RB1 Furya
wonder what the R stands for?
"the initials bimota and consist of the initials of the surnames of the three partners fondation white morri and drummers. This model was developed in workshops Ferrari. Racing department of Maranello. The windshield and a patent Ferrari"
looks like you have a really special bike Nige
wonder why nobody noticed it/remembered it before
We can't have been the first people ever to go in this museum . .
Would be excellent if you could get yours up and running looking like this
good luck
Ian
