Spark plugs, hmm... i can't find a lot of reference on the forum about sb6 spark plugs so thought i'd start a thread that will be easier to find with the search function.

So what is your weapon of choice for spark plugs?

I've seen a post from Evil saying he uses CR9EK copper plugs and also a thread about Brisk plugs but no feed back on them. I also read somewhere on here not to use irridium plugs in the gixxer engine as they foul quickly. (may all have been in the same thread actually)

My sb6 had 2 x NGK CR9E and 2 x Denso U27ESR-N which i believe are the same plug.

I've also been told to use a CR8E which will burn hotter?? What would the advantage be to have the plugs burning hotter or colder? Is it more to do with the running conditions ie. ambient temperature and altitude?

Cheers

I also fitted the NGK CR9E based on advice from oily no problems so will keep running them plenty of other areas to tweak Wink

Hotter plugs - the electode heats up because of the electricity going through it an' all. You can see it's mounted to reduce the heat transfere to the head and it's that transfere that "hotter" or "cooler" plugs refer to. it used to be more for aircooled bikes that could spend a lot of time in traffic at different altitude on a motorway or racing.
Always replace as a set and they should be the same Confused

the CR9E is the standard plug the EK uses twin electrode.

Nothing wrong with Iridium plugs, if your bike is fuelling properly and the starting system is in good condition - sound battery and clean connections. But they won't stand the abuse of being flooded as well as ordinary plugs. Get the bike running properly and you can take advantage of Iridium's purported advantages - fatter spark and longer life.

A question about spark UVA in general -

Why do Plugs just seem to die? When they foul from flooding why is it that never come good again. I would think that leaning them would do the job. It it doesn't seem to work?

I don't really understand much about plugs, so for the likes of me, the more info in this thread the better.

What's the advantage of running a different 'temp range' plug?
What would be the deciding factor for running a colder or hotter plug?
Is it to do with ambient temp, altitude, fuel type or a combination of all of these?

As I said before it's to do with heat transfer to the head

Brain, I too have an SB6 & without going on too much here is where I'm at. Head is flowed, big cc'd & knife edged. Air box is opened up & that is the biggest issue with that model. Pilots 42.5 still lean.mains 145 still lean, pilot screw 3 turns still lean.needle raised still lean. Cams dialled 106 / 108 deg. 1991 750 cdi 13,000rpm red line (have seen 12,700 eastern creek) yoshi RS3 carbon can. I run 7's no issue. The model runs hot if in traffic, run a switch so you can turn the fan on. I ride with my toes just sticking over the pegs, when they touch time to back off.

I'm still learning about carbs. Still haven't got my sb6 runnig perfect yet but it's not too bad. Still has a bit of a dead spot low in the revs if i give it too much throttle. Once it's over 4500 - 5000 it pulls really well.
