Since no one makes no drill frame/ fairing sliders/guards, for my BIMOTAs Im in the process of getting some custom made ( or I may even try t make them myself).
I have a fairly simple question that Id like some suggestions on;
For a fairing or frame slider to be effective, about how far past the fairing or frame surface should the end of the slider be extended?
Ive seen that many of these types of things stick out anywhere from fractions of an inch to many inches.
Im thinking that maybe a half an inch, up to an inch of extension past the fairing or frame might be enough, but wanted some thought from other people to help me consider the design prior to making them.
Any help is welcomed

I'd just cover the frame and sacrifice the bodywork.

Are you looking for some for your DB7 ?
Ive owned 5 BIMOTAs and quite a few other rare exotic bikes in my time, so Im always coming up with accessories for them. As we all know, there are very very few aftermarket items for these BIMOTAs. And even BIMOTA themselves offer very very few upgrades, or additions.
Most all of the bikes I own, get full make over upgrades and customization.Especially the bikes that I plan to either ride, or grow old with. Only a few of my bikes are left stock ( those that I want as pure collector pieces).
I have already come up with a few different fairing/ frame sliders for my Santa Monica, and my Tesi 3D LE. And now Im looking for something for my Benelli Tornado TRE LE.
Since nothing is made for these bikes, you basically need to either make something from scratch, or mix and match parts and/or adapt something. Often it requires some fabrication, mill, and /or CNC machining components to get a good professional job of it. You dont want to just throw something on the side of the bike.
What I do first is look at options for placement of possible fairing and/or frame sliders/ guards. You want either a section of frame, or engine mounts as these points are strong enough to support the weight of the bike, and not damage the mounting point. If you do some looking at how, and where various fairing sliders are mounted to various models and makes of bike, you will get the right idea.
Once you know of possible correct mounting points, then figure out the basic design you want to try. I suggest coming up with a number of options ( of both mounting points and of slider designs). Then you can set up various options and compare and study each to pick the best one if you have a good pick. And if not, come up with more options and keep trying until you have what works and what looks good too.
Usually Ill try to match fairing/ frame sliders, clip on bar ends, swing arm sliders, and possibly also front and rear axle sliders. You want these to at least compliment each other. They dont need to be identical. But you dont want them to be discordant either.
Take a look at Rizoma, and Dimotiv. Both make superb stuff and you can get good ideas from studying their items. Id also search the internet to come up with design ideas.
I dont have a DB7 ( its on my want list ), so I dont have something already made up for this bike. I usually first get the bike, and then strip it to the frame, and start putting the bike back together, only better than it was in the first place.
