I gave the frame a good clean. The paint is in remarkable condition for a 27 year old Bimota with over 28000 klm on it!
I see the Frame paint finish and colour choice is same style as on my DB2.....it plays tricks with your camera.....in your pictures you have a black frame...silver and a grey one.....almost like you have 3 Different DB2's... |
Yeah just the light I think. I do wish I had 3 DB2’s _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

New steering head cups installed in the frame and new lower bearing cone pressed onto the steering stem. Lower grease seal retainer installed and the stem pressed back into the lower yoke.
I used an inner race from one of the old bearings and a piece of pipe to press the lower bearing onto the stem.

Something that I found interesting...
I bought a spare set of DB2 forks a while back that also came with the steering stem and lower yoke. I decided to use the lower seal retainer off the spare forks as the one on the Juniors forks was bent.
I found that the two seal retainers are different sizes although both are DB2 parts? The one from my Junior is 2mm larger diameter and has a larger section o-ring. I think that the smaller diameter retainer that came on the spare forks that I bought will actually be a better fit as the o-ring will be more centred on the bottom of the frame.
I’m not sure if it was an update by the factory or if they were just made differently???

Something else that I found interesting.....
I initially thought that the special seat unit fasteners were the usual black plastic shouldered bolts that a Bimota used.... but these ones that came on the Junior are in fact black anodised aluminium. I have no idea if these are original Bimota items or a previous owner had them made. I think the later is unlikely as everything else on this bike is bone stock and original.
I polished one of the fasteners to see what it would look like. Not sure yet if I prefer the black or polished look??

Coming together nicely......the shiney bolt sure is nice....but....and just my opinion....the black is better...as they match and stand out less to the seat and bumpstop…..with Bimota...often...Less is more...
Lower stem bearing cup/seal....There was an issue with some early bimotas that the steering was "stiff"...because the rubber seal sealed to the headstock tube...and the weight of the bike rammed it up hard....and the rubber bound with the tube making steering notchy or stiff....the fix?...remove the rubber O ring and have metal on metal/….so maybe your original ring is to fix that issue?....you'll only really know when its all bound and tightened up and sat on its wheels with the weight transferring up onto it |

I’ve not decided weather to go with the polished or black seat unit fasteners yet.... I’ll decide when I put it together 🤔
Thanks for the heads up on the lower steering head seal 👍 _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Time for an overdue update......
Wheels, rotors and hardware all cleaned up and back on. Cush rubbers look to be in good condition, not sure if they’d be original or if they’ve been replaced at some point.
Cush Drive puns (bolts) are all present and accounted for. Quite common to find these broken in DB2’s apparently? Maybe the lower horsepower of the Junior has been more gentle on them.
Rotors, sprocket and bearings all in great condition. All of the ‘wavey’ was haste’s on the floating front rotor were flattened as per usual on a used rotor. I removed them all and re-waved them.

Next up is the clip-ons and switchgear....
The bars were corroded and a little bent. It didn’t warrant replacing anything, so I straightened them and gave them a clean up.
Switches came apart so that the contacts could be cleaned and lubricated.
Satisfied with the outcome

A good fix for your brake fluid cover if you can be bothered is Cerakote or Gun Kote. The coating is only a couple of thou thick so you don't lose the definition of the wording on the cap & is chemical resistant. |

Thanks Weed, I ended up just giving it a light sand and painted it satin black. _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Rear subframe, heat shield puzzle and mufflers all back on. Then tightened the header flange nuts making sure that there’s clearance between the rear shock and the collector. Everything has to go together in the correct sequence or the heat shields are a right pain in the arse.

Carbon fibre front and rear fenders came up not too bad with a polish. The weave appears to have a gold tinge to it, which I was informed on the FB page was due to ageing of the resin. I haven’t noticed it before on any other carbon fibre parts that I have. I quite like the look of the gold tinge.

A few more bits and pieces back together.... headlight, dash, fuel pump, horn, intake rubbers. Still need to tidy up the wiring but I’ll do that after the carbs are back in
