|
|
I have a 2000 sb8rs with 1000 miles. I rode it for 1 season than parked it for over a year now it will not start. Can someone please direct me in the steps necessary to get it started.
It will start and run if I use starting fluid directly into the throttle body but the fuel is not being delivered from the tank.
I am in the USA NC
Thank you in advance. Chris |

can you hear the fuel pump run when you switch the ignition on? |

a) Check the fuel pump is working you can hear it and you can feel the fuel pipes getting up to pressure. If its not working check the connector.
b) Check your fuel filter is not blocked
c) Check the side stand and gear lever
d) Check your fuel strainer is not blocked.
e) Then check out your Throttle Position Sensor - opening up the tank/injectors can knock it a long way off its proper setting and make the engine run very lean == no starting! There should be some paint on the TPS to guide you where its supposed to be.
f) Things get tougher at this point - your're looking at cabling (easy) crankshaft sensor, (not bad) ecu (almost impossible) and injectors (easy swap).
If you had to muck about with the battery because it was flat my bet is a or E as lifting the tank mucks them around...

PS: did you check that your tank has good petrol in it???

Thank you for the help. I have removed all the fuel delivery components from the tank and checked them individually. The fuel pump will run if I run an independent power source to it but it does not seam to turn on when everything is connected on the bike. I had drained the tank prior to storage and put fresh fuel in when I tried to start the bike initially. |

Thats an interesting one! I am not sure if the SB8R cuts its engine by stopping the fuel and leaving the sparks still firing.
Have you tried a voltage check on the 4 pin flat connector? Not sure which pin is which but, two pins should have +12VDC relative to chassis. One pin is float level sensor and the other is power to the pump.
The other thoughts are a) kill switch and b) knock sensor c) In Gear + Sidestand kill switch.
Less likely ones --- either water temperature sensor: thermostat/rad.
I've had problems starting my 8K when any of these things are awol but it shows an ignition fault light for most of them. Again not sure if the 8R shows any warning lights if any of these are not connected.
Knock sensor is on the top of the rear cylinder.
Cheers

I had the same issue with my sb8r the problem that i had was a bad connection of the 3 wired connector which you see when you remove the tank ( you have to open this when you want to remove your tank) hope you'll know what i mean) if not please let me know,
Good luck! |

I checked this connection, only one wire has power from the harness with the ignition turned on. If I connect everything to the connector nothing happens. I have removed the float assembly and the fuel pump assembly from the tank and connect it to the pigtail connection from the harness and nothing happens.
If I run power direct to the fuel pump it will turn on. |

Hi looks like you're getting close!!
There are two pairs of wires in the connector:
pair 1: the pump power
pair 2: float level
On my bike (SB8 but version K) they are
pair 1:RED/BLACK pins 1 and 2, pump power
pair 2:Blue/white pins 3 and four, float
Please see the picture below....
You can check your connector is not the faulty item by running a continuity check from each of the pins on the connector to either the pump internal plug/socket or the float internal plug socket on setting ohms. You should see a very small value. Make sure the pump assembly is disconnected before doing this.
Then check your power to the pump assembly. Plug the naked pump assembly into the bike harness. Switch on the bike check the voltage on the pump power connector. Should be 12VDC.
If its not 12VDC it sounds like the SB8 either:
a) Thinks the fuel should not be switched on, lots of reasons kill switch and all of the sensors mentioned just before
or
b) Pump Connector fault as described by bimota carbon
c) It has a wiring loom fault or other connector fault. Or just a faulty fuse ...
If you think its (b) make a very small cut in the loom side of the cable red cable and check if its showing a 12vdc signal. If it is then you have a connnector fault. Time to fit a new connector or bypass it on the red wire just to get you going!!!
Something to mention is that the fuel pump is only powered briefly when you switch the bike on/turning the kill switch on, or you are pressing the starter motor. So you will need to be patient and keep switching the bike on and off before doing a reading.
Hope that this helps!!
Good luck

OK, the problem is solved after checking all the fuses and relays, it turns out that it was the 30A fuse related to the starter motor relay that is located on its own next to the relay behind the headlight. Now she runs!!
I'll post some photos when I get the body work back on the bike.
Thank you all!! or ya'al like they say in the south. |
