I an seriously contemplating replacing the well nuts and screws in my carbon fiber body work with dzus fasteners. The question: is this a problem with this type of bodywork? Does this make any sort of sense at all? _________________ Spike C.

I can't see it being an issue. Only thing is that you'll have pop rivets through part of the fairing for the back part of the fasteners. Should be hidden by the front part anyway. I have dzus fasteners on my carbon race fairing on my kwaka. In saying that, I've never had any issues with well nuts on other fairings. The db4 has some of those ittle spring clip type fasteners that capscrews screw into. As Brian says...most Dzus fasteners require the backing plate to be fixed with 2 small rivets...although some types have the spring clips that sort of "bulldog" clip onto the back fairing...and dont require rivets at all...its whether these clips or the riveteed ones will actually fit in the locations without it compromising the "fit" of the panel going over the top...as they will be a little thicker than the rubber wellnuts that merely have a 1mm think compressible cap that fits between the 2 joined panels...
The rubber wellnuts also make for a flexible fit to some extent...wheras Dzus fasteners wont....although the vibe issues on a DS1100 motors arent as bad as earlier Duc engines...
I do find that the panels are a doddle to strip compared to earlier Bimota bike bodyworks...and I'm a great believer of "if it aint broke, dont fix it!"...but evidently each to their own...Early Bims like Db1 and DB2 have Dzus fasteners...but the back body is neither rivetted nor a clip....the body is moulded into the back of the fibreglass panels...even the fairing screen has tiny scres that fasten into threaded inserts in fibreglass in the back of the fairing...all very labour intensive,,,but neat I suppose

Thanks for the input guys, I may just acquire a sample of one or two styles and see how they work, I especially like the idea of not drilling any holes in the bodywork. That carbon stuff doesn't like drill bits! _________________ Spike C.

It SB8K came with Dzuz fasteners as standard on all fairing fixings.
The plate is not drilled to the fairing just a clip style.
Don't have any of just the clip. |

You need to use a special high-speed bit like the ones used for Acrylic and Plexiglas. |
