|

Several people seem to think that having the tank below the engine is a bad idea, the bb1 arcticle in Practical Sportsbikes suggests the same.
Team Pami built a racer perhaps 15(?) years ago, with a carbon fibre petrol tank above the engine, and an alu oil tank below. According to Gottfried at Pami, this was a much better arrangement than having the oil above and the petrol below.
I know that several other Supermonos has been converted to have the tank on top of the frame rails. Is there anybody here that has done such a conversion?
I have a long-running project where I try to make my supermono as light as possible, and replacing the heavy Acerbis plasic tank is a future step towards the ultimate (in my view) bb1. My efforts so far has been towards making a alu tank placed below the engine, much like the one depicted here: http://www.kvenna.net/Guests/Anthony/BB1/slides/tankfrontright.html
However, I have now started considering making an alu tank to place on top of the engine, below the "tank/seat" fibreglass.
The space is limited, so the tank will in any case be smaller than the plastic tank, but as this bike is mostly ridden on track days, that is not a big issue.
Any thoughts on this matter?
Any experience to share? _________________ Anders

Hmm I actually like the tank below because the handling is real nice imo. If having a tank on top won't that make the bike no differnce from the rest of the bikes out there. If i can buy or someone can make a nice alu tank below I will be really interested . _________________ Riding a bike is only as dangerous as your mind and level of training. The rest is up to God. |

So, as I understand it, the theory that suggests that having the tank on the underside of the bike is that the sloshing about of the fuel upsets handling..
Can anyone explain why having the tank at the top of the bike would be better? - the greater movement of the upper side of the bike through corners would induce greater sloshing, and likely make the situation worse. |

Blimey , there is enough to worry about already ... preload, compression damping, rebound damping, ride height, head angle, tyre pressure, type of tyre, static sag and now Sloshabloodybility? aghhhhhhh! Maybe electric bikes are the way ahead .... _________________ Pomps
